TRAI Says Vodafone-Idea Merger Talk Is Premature

TRAI, the Telecom watchdog on Friday had announced that it will look into the planned Vodafone and Idea merger “as and when” controlling issues yield up.

“That’s (the merger of both Idea and Vodafone India) a complete business decision. I would not like to remark. As and when there is a supervisory issue I will definitely give advice to the administration,” TRAI Chairman R S Sharma said on the spin-offs of Momentum Jharkhand in Ranchi on Friday i.e. 17th February.

On 30th January, Britain’s Vodafone Group said that it is in deliberations to merge its Indian entity with Idea Cellular in an all-share transaction to create the nation’s biggest telecom operator with about 43 percent revenue.

The joint entity is predictable to pose tough competition to the present market leader Bharti Airtel and aggressive new participant Reliance Jio.

The business merger of Vodafone – the nation’s second-largest mobile network operator – with the Aditya Birla Group Company – India’s third-largest mobile operator would create a business with over 395 million customers and form one of the biggest telecom businesses in the world.

Praising the IT policies of Jharkhand, Sharma had said firms can come and capitalize here as right skill-sets are effortlessly available.

He also said that Jharkhand is the first state where TRAI is testing open channel policy in which any telecom service provider can come in and take their fibre without excavating again.

“Jharkhand is vital for testing our new rules,” he said, saying that Ranchi has the perspective to become the Bengaluru of the East India.
