Tollywood is full with examples where some top heros openly criticize each other, only to turn out to be good friends later.
There won’t be permanent friends or rivals in Tollywood. The best friends can become rivals, and vice versa. In recent times, hero Balakrishna had told Chiranjeevi is his close friend though they once had a combat of words.
The Simha hero had warned Chiranjeevi at an election meeting with his well-known dialogue from his movie — “Nuvvu okavaipe choosavu, rendo vaipu choopista.” Chiranjeevi had called Balakrishna’s remarks as ‘childish’ but after this spat; both the stars didn’t meet for a long time.
But currently, both the actors claim they are close friends. Chiranjeevi had attended the audio launch of Balakrishna’s 100th movie and even Balakrishna also joined various events at Chiru’s family. “When politics entered the film industry, competition also initiated but it never displayed in their careers,” says director Tammareddy Bharadwaja.
Remarkably, Chiranjeevi was also tangled in a combat with another hero, Mohan Babu. When the 75 years of Telugu Cinema was rejoiced a few years ago, Mohan Babu flashed a fight by verbally attacking Chiranjeevi for the award given to him. Chiranjeevi also had given back his award. For some months, both the heros indirectly hurled a war of words on each other but unexpectedly, a few months ago, Chiranjeevi was the chief invitee at a felicitation function for Mohan Babu, who accomplished 40 years in Tollywood. They hugged and said that they are best friends.
Conflicts have been there in the past also, N.T. Rama Rao (NTR) and Krishna, who had made Alluri Seetharama Raju which Sr. NTR wished to, do. However NTR had announced the venture, he didn’t take it up for years and Krishna had announced that he would be making a movie on the freedom fighter.
“Both the actors didn’t meet directly for many years. Years after, NTR had decided to watch Krishna’s movie and really appreciated his character,” says a close representative. Remarkably, before this spat, Krishna produced a movie named Devudu Chesina Manushulu where NTR performed as the lead hero along with him.
Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) and NTR, also, had a conflict going, even and yet they once called as ‘brothers’. But once NTR merged politics and came to influence, he went against ANR and his studios. ANR had gone to court and won, but the enmity continued.
When Jr NTR speaks about his uncle Balakrishna and his movies on Twitter, the two have not seen in recent years. The young hero is missing out from many events occurring at his uncle’s home.
Balakrishna once got irritated that his name and picture was not on the invitation greetings card of Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s 75-year-old movie career celebrations. He didn’t even talk to ANR and didn’t go when the legendary actor had passed away.
“It was a big issue at the time and most of his friends asked him to attend the cremation, but he refused. The spat between the two actors stayed unresolved,” says a representative.
