Former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, has become a leading candidate for US Secretary of State to Presidentelect Donald Trump, a source close to the situation said Monday. The source said that John Bolton, who served as US ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, was also being studied to head the State Department.

Rudy Giuliani, aged 72, was one of Trump’s most popular and most prominent supporters on the electoral track, frequently introducing him to rallies with violent attacks on Democrat Hillary Clinton.

He was mayor of New York during the September 11, 2001 attacks and led the city during the crisis after the destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in close collaboration with President George W. Bush.

Giuliani was one of Trump’s first proponents, has been his friend for many years, and he has vigorously defended through the various controversies that have taken the New York businessman.

Her rhetoric was remarkable for having repeatedly accused Clinton of having violated laws by her classified information processing on a private email server while she was Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.

“If Rudy wants it, he will get it,” said former House Speaker, Newt Gingrich, to “The Kelly File” on Fox News.

Gingrich, who was also mentioned as possibly having a role in the Trump administration, said he thought Giuliani would have been interested in being named instead as the Attorney General of the United States or Secretary of Homeland Security.

However, he said that Giuliani would do a fabulous job as Secretary of State of Trump. “It’s already known all over the world,” said Gingrich.

Bolton, aged 67, a senior member of the American Enterprise Institute think tank, served as UN ambassador to the United Nations from August 2005 to December 2006 during the Bush administration.

Previously, he was Under-Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. He has often provided foreign policy advice to Republican presidential candidates.

Trump is working on choosing the people he wants to place in his cabinet for when he takes over the presidency on 20 January.

In a sign that Trump could get closer to some decisions, his spokesman Jason Miller said Trump would meet with elected vice president Mike Pence, who is in charge of the Trump transition effort, at Trump Tower in New York on Tuesday.

Miller said Trump and Pence would “look at a number of names for key jobs.”

“If the elected vice president meets with the president-elect to discuss the names, I would say it’s serious, obviously,” he said.

The US Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, a possible choice for the Secretary of Defense, was seen entering Trump Tower on Monday.
