Kangana’s, upcoming movie Rangoon is in legal trouble for infringing the real life character Fearless Nadia
Rangoon, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan is in legal trouble. The character “Julia” played by Kangana is based on the story of Nadia. Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd, a Film production company has filed a suit against the Director of the movie Vishal Bhardwaj and other in the Mumbai High Court on grounds of copyright infringement.
Roy Wadia from Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd, has claimed that Kangana’s character in the movie is based on real–life Australian stunt actor Mary Evans, who is popularly known as “Fearless Nadia” for her fearless dare devil stunts.
Moreover, Roy Wadia’s firm hold the right to all the publicity material and poster for Fearless Nadia films it has produced. Mr. Roy, the Managing director of Wadia Movietone Pvt. Ltd, claimed that Rangoon makers have infringed the character for their film carying out a breach of trust.
In 2006, Ronnie Screwvala, founder and CEO of UTV Group was approached to make the film on Nadia by Mr. Roy. But it didn’t happen for some reasons. Roy Wadia learned that the film was shelved. Later in the year 2008, Wadia signed an agreement with a German firm to produce them with Wadias’ copyrighted material on Fearless Nadia to make a film on her.
Then after seven year, Roy Wadia has got the news of Rangoon having made with Nadia’s life story. that a film called Rangoon was being made and that it was supposedly based around Nadia’s life. Therefore, he filed a suit against Vishal and co. which could land them in trouble. Disney UTV (then, headed by Siddharth Roy Kapur) assured Wadia and the that the film wouldn’t be made.
In 2016, While the shooting of Rangoon, Vishal assured him that the film was a love story in the period of World War II. To his surprise, Wadia, after seeing the film’s promos in 2017, realized that the movie is certainly more inspired from the life of Fearless Nadia.
