Tollywood has very few women-centric movies to its credit, and in that, just a few heroines have been fruitful with such movies.
In a recent meeting, heroine Anjali barbed out that merely a few heroines can pull of female-centric movies. Within the little number of women-oriented movies that are made in Tollywood, the accomplishment rate is abysmal.
Heroines like Nayantara, Anushka Shetty, Anjali, Shriya Saran and Charmme have performed in this kind, but only a few have prospered. Moreover, in these days, the industry has not seen many movies with a lady in the lead.
Yet, if you look at the previous movies, we have had Vijaya Shanti and Jayasudha, who are well-known for their female-centric movies.
“If the script is from an event that has occurred in the present times, or is a social reason, then the movie connects more with the viewers. The movie’s success is based not on the actress, but the script.
These days, the movie makers lack the awareness about the story and incline to focus on extra things, that’s why each movie or actress is not prolific,” says Jayasudha, who has acted in more than 60 female-centric movies. She says that after the script, comes the heroine’s performance and how she defends her role.
There are numerous established heroines in Tollywood, but filmmakers are seeing at only precise actresses for such movies. “I am prepared to do a female-oriented movie if somebody approaches me with a good script,” declares Rakul Preet Singh. “I feel that whether female or male, you need to first believe in your own ability when you are doing a great subject,” she says.
The risk factor
“Doing female-oriented movies are a big business menace, and that’s why not many such movies get produced in Telugu cinema industry. Distributors don’t come onward to buy the movie. Their probability is grounded on whether the lead actress is recognized or not,” speaks director Gunasekhar.
He says that producer Shyam Prasad Reddy thought in the content of his movie, and roped in Anushka Shetty for the movie Arundhati. “He had the ability and guts to release the movie on his own, so he opted Anushka for the role. The movie became a big success,” speaks Gunasekhar.
There are a few heroines like Nayantara and Anushka, who balance the female-centric movies with commercial ones. “Nayantara pulls out crowd since she strongly trusts in the content and story. She is one heroine who has shown a lot of mettle and talent in doing such movies,” speaks Rakul.
Written for women
Some directors write scripts keeping in mind certain actress. “Bhagmati was inscribed for Anushka. If she hadn’t granted to do it, the venture might not have occurred,” speaks G. Ashok, the movie’s director, whose another movie Chitrangada, which released newly, has Anjali as the lead actor.
“Look at other movie industries where they have more true stories. Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan have proved that they can do more female-centric movies,” says Jayasudha, saying that filmmakers today don’t give prominence to females in their movies. “The woman’s role is there for songs or a few acts. Heroines are also not coming onward to do bold characters,” she speaks.
