The HRD Minister released the NIRF India rankings 2017,Indian Institute of Science(IISc)-Banglore holds first place in India’s best University.
According to the NIRF India rankings 2017, released by HRD ministry, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore tops the list followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.
Unlike the previous year, the rankings were released based on different categories like Universities, Colleges, Management and Engineering. The rankings were released by the Union minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar here today.
In the case of colleges, Miranda House College from Delhi ranked the top list followed by the Loyola College, Chennai and Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi. This was the first time colleges where ranked,
Indian Institute of Science figured at the top in ‘Overall’ and ‘Universities’ categories.
Jawaharlal Nehru University which was ranked at the third position in the last year has been holding the second place in the University Category.
In the case of schools, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras ranked the top engineering school and Jamia Hamdard holds the finest management institute.
Kolkata’s Jadavpur University students who faced criticism for being “anti-national” ranked fifth among the top 10 Universities.
In the Survey more than 3,300 institutes were considered and it published the survey in 2016, but still the response from the colleges was very poor. Some of the well-known colleges which didn’t apply this year include Ramjas College, Delhi’s St Stephen’s College, Hansraj College, Delhi School of Economics and Hindu College.
The rankings were given based on the 20 parameters under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which was launched last year.

The parameters broadly cover ‘Research and Professional Practices’, ‘Outreach and Inclusivity’, ‘Teaching, Learning and Resources’, ‘Perception’ and ‘Graduation Outcomes’.
The NIRF frames a methodology to rank the institutions across the country and consider the overall endorsements and understandings arrived by a committee set up by the ministry, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.
IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore have swapped their positions in the top management institute list.
