MS Dhoni and the Tamil Nadu cricket team, who are in the capital city Delhi to play the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament, were exiled safely.
Chennai: Cricketers from Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand including some well-known names such as M.S. Dhoni, L. Balaji and Dinesh Karthik persisted a scare as a fire had broken out at team hotel at Dwarka in New Delhi on Friday morning.
The cricket teams, who are in the capital city to play the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament, were displaced safely after clouds of smoke originated following the fire accident in a shopping center which is inside the hotel grounds.
While Dhoni and his co-players were having breakfast at about 6.20 am before their scheduled parting to the ground for the semi-final contrary to Bengal, some of the Tamil Nadu cricketers were fast asleep having frolicked the semi-final the last day when the smoke immersed the hotel.
Tamil Nadu skipper Vijay Shankar was staggered that the fire alarm didn’t go off. “I was notified over intercom by crew physio Thulasi. When I unlocked the door, I could barely see anything as dense smoke had packed the corridor. Instead of depending on phone calls and text messages, we speedily knocked on other doors. In no time, we all met in the lobby.
The complete contingent (24 members) counting support staff are fine and no one freaked through evacuation,” said Shankar.
After spending about two and a half hours at the lobby, Tamil Nadu cricketers had returned to their rooms. The semi-final amid Jharkhand and Bengal has been adjourned to Saturday and the winners will take on Tamil Nadu on Monday.
