Filmmaker Julian Karikalan needs the iconic maestro’s music to be heard across regions.
Indian-born Australian moviemaker Julian Karikalan pulled off a coup of kinds by roping in Isaignani Ilaiyaraja for his English-Australian feature picture titled Love & Love Only.
Going by bases, this is the first-ever English story film that the expert has composed original tunes and background score for.
Communicating to DC in an exclusive chat, Julian who hails from Madurai, but developed in Australia, speaks, “It is a cross-cultural romantic film, which sorts Rohit Kalia, a former Georgia Nicholas and Mr India Australia in the lead. Though I have not assisted any person in the film industry, I have been working in plays and documentaries — and my hunger for movies drew me into tinsel rural.”
Speaking about how he brought Raja on board, he utters, “I am a great fan of Raja sir, and grew up pay attention to his soul stirring melody. It was my dream to work together with him someday. After finishing the film, and editing it completely, I made a preview using music bits from Raja sir’s past flicks.”

I move toward to Raja sir and screened it, but he declined to watch it as he felt that would puzzle him. He asked me to get the trailer pictures without the music. He loved what he saw, and later look at the full edited version of my film. I also discussed the distribution design of my film here as well as abroad — and how I wanted to take his music across the world.”
Julian adds, “He said me to wait outside his studio and I didn’t receive anything for two hours. I thought he was not glad with my film. Much to my surprise, he called me in later, and gave his signal, saying he was impressed with my new approach to picture making — as well as my idea of releasing it directly through online platforms, and not in movie house.”
Elaborating on the music score, Julian carry on, “There are two records and — for the one picturised on the lady lead, Raja sir was particular that only an Australian female singer’s singing would do justice.”
He adds, “He recorded the track and sent it across, later which I used a singer Rachael to complete the song. I sent it back to him, and got his support!” he signs off.
