Hyderabad High Court: Food stalls in Tirumala loot devotees

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on this Tuesday has expressed anger at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Executive Officer for letting hoteliers in Tirumala to loot pilgrims by selling food and beverages at excessive prices.

A split bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili, though dealing with a PIL by Parihaara Seva Samiti, said it appeared that the TTD specialists have connived with the hoteliers and retail owners and were letting them loot devotees.

The bench had pointed out that shop owners and hoteliers were also charging Rs 100 for snacks and other beverages while the display board recorded the cost of these products at Rs 10.

The bench stated that though the hoteliers and stall owners were reining roost without paying taxes and not even dispensing the bills, the authorities stayed mute spectators.

Appearing before the court as per its way, TTD EO Anil Singhal well-versed the bench that checks had been led in the last three days and hoteliers and stall owners had been levied Rs 21 lakh fine for selling the snacks and beverages on more rates.

The bench had asked the EO why the TTD was not fixing sensible prices of foodstuff and beverages that both the customers and sellers found reasonable. Counsel stated that fresh tenders for stalls and hotels will be called in the month of December and the TTD will integrate stringent rules with regard to the price of things.

Though dispensing with the presence of the EO in the circumstance, the bench directed the TTD to file the pawn by November 14 explaining the motive behind imposing Rs 21 lakh fine on hoteliers and stall owners.
