Ganesh idol prices have increased by 30% to 80% as raw materials such as clay, plaster of paris, steel, foam and fibre attract 18% tax.
Hyderabad: Ganesh idols have become beloved. The Goods and Service Tax (GST) on fibre, colours, foam, scrap and clay had seen their prices rise steeply by 30 percent to 80 percent.
Mr Sundar Kalakar, a famous artist, who gets good orders from all over the nation, stated, “I used to acquire materials cost Rs 29 lakh each year. This time, maximum raw materials, like plaster, clay, foam, fibre and steel which were not taxed, is having an 18 percent GST. The previous year, we obtained high-quality stone plaster at Rs 1,700 per tonne that rose to Rs 2,000 per tonne this year. Likewise, the cost of fibre has enlarged from Rs 4,200 to Rs 5,800 for a 35-kg bag. The colour charges also rose by 50 percent. Moreover, the prices of paints have also amplified. All these run to a rise in expenses.”
A Ganesh pandal organiser in Rajendra Nagar, S. Thirupathi Reddy, stated, “Previous year, we bought a 10-feet idol for Rs 5,500 and this year we had to spend out Rs 9,500 for the similar idol. Further, transportation charges have also increased,” he said.
A vendor at Jummeraat bazaar, Mr Ravinder Singh, said, “The charges have trekked amid 30 percent to 80 percent this year.” Moreover, the demolition drive on idol-making entities in Dhoolpet that used to house more than 100 big and 150 small units also wedged the supply in the city.
Due to a land clash, the Hyderabad Revenue Department devastated about 50 units 6 months ago, compelling artists to get fresh land on lease. These entities used to start work 6 months before Vinayaka Chaturthi. Due to the devastations, production by major components came down significantly.
