Donald Trump Agrees To Meet NATO Leaders In Europe In May 2017

WEST PALM BEACH: President Donald Trump agreed to meet with leaders of alliances in Europe in May during a phone call on Sunday with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who also discussed the separatist conflict in the east Of Ukraine.

Trump was elected on the promise to push NATO members to increase their funding to the Western alliance to alleviate the financial burden on the United States.

This proposal has aroused opposition from both his Republican and Democratic colleagues and the idea worried the European allies who fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin may benefit.

A statement from the White House said Trump and Stoltenberg “discussed how to encourage all NATO allies to honor their defense spending commitments.”

“President Trump has agreed to participate in a meeting of NATO leaders in Europe in May,” the statement said.

Trump and Stoltenberg also “discussed the potential for a peaceful resolution of the conflict along the Ukrainian border”.

During the past week, an influx of hostilities broke out between the Ukrainian army and the separatists supported by Russia, each accusing the other of a new wave of bombing. More than 40 people were killed in areas held by the government and rebels.

Trump pulled the fire at home to want to warm up ties with Putin.

In an interview broadcast on Sunday at the Fox Channel Super Bowl pre-game show, Trump expressed Interviewer Bill O’Reilly’s concern that “Putin is a killer”.

“We have a lot of killers … You think our country is so innocent? You think our country is so innocent? He said, citing the 2003 war in Iraq.

US Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who lost to Trump during the first Republican presidential election campaign last year, tweeted that it would be a mistake to lift US sanctions against Russia, a step that Trump has considered.

“Only the reason why we should ever lift sanctions on #Putin is if it meets the conditions of sanctions and ends the violations of sovereignty #ukraine,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, told CNN “State of the Union” that he was not going to criticize everything Trump said, but on Russia: “I do not see Not this issue in the same way.
