BEIJING, China – At least 22 people were killed and an unknown number of others were reportedly trapped in a scaffolding collapse on Thursday morning at a construction site in eastern China, officials said.
A work platform in the cooling tower of the Fengcheng power station in Jiangxi province fell at about 7:30 am (2330 GMT on Wednesday), said a local occupational safety official. Two other workers were reported as injured, but there were no immediate words about the fate of the prisoners.
Images of the television and photographs of the site show iron pipes and wooden planks scattered on the floor of the massive concrete cooling tower.
China has suffered a series of major industrial accidents in recent months blamed for corruption, contempt for security and pressure to boost production in a context of slowing economy.
The manager of a logistics company was recently sentenced to death for a massive explosion in an illegal chemical store in the northern port of Tianjin, which killed 173 people, most of them firefighters and police officers.
