Chennai: The CBI on Tuesday plunged down on the residences and properties belonging to former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in Chennai and in another place in Tamil Nadu.
The raids were in connection with an FIR recorded this morning against P Chidambaram in connection with Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media in 2008 when he was finance minister in the UPA-1 government under PM Manmohan Singh.
INX Media had started NewsX in 2008 with jailed Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani Mukerjea as partners.
Official sources in Delhi stated the CBI raids were spread across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Gurugram.
The CBI raids are also taking place at the Nungambakkam residence of P Chidambaram in Chennai, a senior police official stated in Chennai.
Unofficial reports stated the raids were also on at Karaikudi, the hometown of Chidambaram.
Responding to the CBI raids on the various places, Chidambaram assumed that the government wanted him to stop writing against it and is, therefore ‘targeting’ him.
“Government is using CBI and other organizations are targeting my son and his friends as government wants to silence my voice,” the ex-minister commented.
“Should I stop writing against the government: P Chidambaram after raids,” he questioned.
He advance added, “Every case was administered according to law and approval granted or refused accord with FIPB recommendations consisting of 5 Government of India Secretaries,” restating his stand on the dispute.
