BMW i have launched its augmented realism product visualizer powered by Tango on Google Play, meaning clients can explore and pre-configure their ideal BMW i3 or i8 anywhere, anytime. BMW i is the 1st automotive brand in the world to offer consumers an interactive, 3-D augmented reality experience of their products. Using Tango, Google’s smartphone augmented reality technology, users can explore the advanced BMW I vehicles as a real-size, communicating visualization.

Ensuring a successful pilot program in selected dealerships worldwide, the BMW I Visualizer app can now be downloaded from Google Play by anybody with a Tango-enabled device in most countries in the world – users in China and the USA will be able to download the app by April. After downloading the app, users can visualize and experience the BMW i8 or i3 products, using augmented reality to create a 3-D image which can be explored interactively: the users can open the boot or the doors, even getting “inside” the car to take a quicker look at the interior. It’s also possible to experiment with altered interior and exterior colors and a variation of wheel rims.
“We know that our users are busy people and that we required fitting into their lives,” stated Andrea Castronovo, BMW Group Vice President, Sales Tactic and Future Retail. “With the BMW i Visualizer now obtainable on Google Play, we are pleased that clients can now explore our products in a truly interactive and fun way, whenever and wherever it outfits them.
Our vehicles are emotional products and to get that emotional feeling, you truly need to experience them,” he sustained. Andrea Castronovo believes that in situations where the chosen product isn’t available on the spot, this visualization is the next best thing. The quality of the images created is certainly very realistic. “During our pilot, people had great fun traveling the car, even bending down their heads as if there really were a roof there,” Castronovo stated. “It’s that level of detail which means this technology offers the consumer’s real added value,” he sustained.
